coolant sensor is in fact a valve that is part of the cooling circuit. Whether the valve opens or closes, depends on the coolant temperature. When the engine is cold, the valve is closed and the coolant is kept in the engine. When the temperature in the engine rises, the thermostat opens thereby letting the coolant flow through to the radiator. The temperature switch determines when the thermostat needs to open.
