Your V-ribbed belts or drive belts drive various parts in your engine including the alternator but also the compressor of the air conditioning, power steering pump and the water pump. The drive belt itself is driven by a crankshaft pulley. When the belt starts moving, its movement drives the above mentioned parts in your engine.
